2022 Lookback: SpaceWill's Selected Images on 12 Global Even

On May 19, 2022, GaoFen-1 satellite imaged the erupting Anak Kratau Volcano,
Lampung, Indonesia, showing massive lava and ash plume from the crater.

 

The busy 2022 passes in a blink of an eye. As a satellite imagery supplier, our “eyes” (SuperView, GaoFen and ZiYuan satellites) in the space captured many globally concerned events this year, including natural disasters, sport matches, accidents and milestones. We are very happy to share these image stories with you to look back the hot events in 2022.

1. Tonga’s Hunga-Tonga-Hunga-Ha'apai Volcano Eruption

In January 2022, Tonga’s Hunga-Tonga-Hunga-Ha'apai erupted. This disaster killed four people, and got many injured. The eruption was the largest explosion recorded in the atmosphere by modern instrumentation, far larger than any 20th century volcanic event or nuclear bomb test. Below the before-after satellite images showed how destructive of the volcanic eruption:

The before-after images were collected by GaoFen-1 on Apr 30, 2019 and SuperView-1 on Jan 21, 2022, showing only the 
two ends of the island left after the horrible eruption, the rest parts were burnt brown from green.

 

2. 2022 Winter Olympics Games Held Beijing, China

In February 2022, Winter Olympics 2022 was held in China. The venues were distributed in Beijing and its suburb Yanqing District, and Hebei Province’s Zhangjiakou. Some events repurposing venues originally built for Beijing 2008. Here we chose are the images of a new stadium and halfpipe for the Games:

♦ National Speed Skating Oval from 2019 to 2021

SuperView-1 satellite monitored the changes of National Speed Skating Oval from 2019 to 2021.
It was the only new venue not inherited from Olympics 2008 in Beijing Zone.

 

♦ The Halfpipe where Eileen Gu Made Record

SuperView-2 satellite image on February 7, 2022 showed the Halfpipe where Eileen
Gu made history with her Gold medal in the freestyle skiing.

 

3. Tornadoes Hit Jacksboro in Texas

In March 2022, a powerful tornado swept through Texas, USA and caused a lot of people injured, many houses damaged, cars overturned, trees uprooted, and roads piled high with debris. The storm hit so quickly that the residents had only minutes to find shelters. Below are the images of the damaged buildings in Jacksboro town:

School in Texas, USA was torn off by the disastrous tornadoes.

4. Ever Forward Container Ship Aground in Chesapeake Bay, MD for over a Month

In March and April 2022, the Ever Forward container ship ran aground in Chesapeake Bay, Maryland in USA. This 1,095-foot-long ship lodged there for 35 days. It was nearly a year after another ship (Even Given) run by the same company jammed the Suez Canal, blocking traffic in one of the world's busiest waterways for six days. The image below was taken on the day before the ship was on the move finally:

♦ Aground Ever Forward and Tugboats and Barges to Help

Collected on April 16, 2022, SuperView-1 image showed Ever Forward ship aground in Chesapeake Bay, Maryland in USA, and the tugboats and barges working to lighten the load and refloat the vessels.

 

5. Indonesia's Anak Krakatau Erupted again

In April and May 2022, Anak Krakatau volcano erupted again, the ash column reached up to three km high from the summit. Its last eruption happened in 2018, generating a tsunami that killed 429 people and left thousands homeless. This GaoFen-1 satellite image below showed the volcano was erupting:

6. Massive Fires Burnt in New Mexico, USA

In May and June 2022, record-breaking forest fires burst in Las Vegas, New Mexico in USA. The fires burned extensive forests and destroyed thousands houses. The SuperView-1 satellite images showed the burnt buildings in a holiday village:

7. Yellow Stone River Flooding

In June 2022, unprecedented amounts of rainfall caused substantial flooding, rockslides, and mudslides within Yellowstone National Park. Historic water levels caused severe damage to roads, water systems and power lines. More than 10,000 visitors to Yellowstone National Park were forced to evacuate. This image pair showed some section of the river before-after the disaster:

8. Wildfires Burnt in Mt. Penteli in Greece

In June through August 2022, parts of Europe, the Middle East and North Africa were affected by wildfires. The bulk of the fires affected Mediterranean Countries, with the main areas affected in Algeria, France, Greece, Portugal and Spain. The image below showed a large burnt scar left by a horrible wildfire in Greece's Mt. Penteli:

showed over 40 km² area in Mt. Penteli, to the north of Athens, Greece.

 

9. China's Largest Fresh-water Lake Suffered from Severe Drought

From July to September 2022, China's largest fresh-water lake/second largest lake, the Poyang Lake suffered from severe drought. Over the three months, its area shrank from 3,300 km² to 240 km², and the water levels at a key monitoring spot fell from 19.43 meters to 7.1 meters. Imaged by GF-1’s Wide-Field Imagers, showing how parched of the lake:

10. 6.8-Magnitude Earthquake in Sichuan Province, China

In September 2022, a 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck Luding County in Sichuan Province, China. 93 people died and 424 were injured. More than 13,000 homes and other infrastructure were damaged or destroyed. This earthquake also triggered a large number of landslides. Below the SuperView-1 image show a massive landslide in the local scenic park:

11. 20th National Congress of CCP Held in Beijing

In October 2022, the 20th National Congress of the CCP was held in the Great Hall of People in Beijing, China. Our new satellite, SuperView NEO-1 captured the delegates going for the Congress on Tiananmen Square:

On Oct 16, 2022 (the opening day), SuperView NEO-1 satellite imaged Beijing Tiananmen Square where parking rows
of Shuttles (in yellow and white) transporting delegates to the Great Hall of the People.

 

12. FIFA World Cup 2022 Held in Qatar

In November 2022, Qatar held FIFA World Cup 2022. This country spent $220 billion over 12 years getting ready to host the championships, shelling out $6.5 billion to build seven of the most technologically advanced stadiums in the world. Below we chose the images of a new stadium and “floating hotels” specially coming to Doha for accommodating the fans travelling from other countries:

And it is a newly-built stadium serving as the flagship venue of the 2022 World Cup.

   Fans During Qatar2022

Imaged by SuperView NEO-1 satellite on December 7, 2022, the three “floating hotels” -MSC World Europa,
MSC Poesia and MSC Opera were berthing at Doha Port to accommodate 10,000+ travelling fans.
